First appearing in episode #3, Kôhei is a young Tokyo MPD detective recruited by Ichijô Kaoru to keep an eye on Maya when
the senior officer suspects there is more to her than she’s been telling. Following her to the nearby city of Miura and then back to
Tokyo, Kôhei eventually settles into a role of a close friend and ally to our heroine, although neither of them would ever admit to
it. They constantly bicker, fight, and throw insults at each other, and Maya does not even try to hide that she would gladly push
him in the way of an oncoming poison dart or throwing knife if the opportunity ever arose. Conversely, Kôhei teases and berates
her on a constant basis, and has made it his personal goal to cajole her into going out on a date with him. In spite of all this, Kôhei
has quickly developed a soft spot in his heart for Maya, and perhaps harbors some deeper feelings for the young woman that may
or may not be mutual.
Outgoing, brash, irritable, and more than a little trigger-happy, he is nonetheless compassionate, and has a surprisingly sensitive
side. He is relentless in his criticism, but in the end is always caring and understanding. He fancies himself a very perceptive
detective, and always one step ahead of everyone else. He doesn't help this image by often appearing totally clueless, stating the
obvious, and being the one to miss out on the important details. His bad sense of humor is legendary. He also has an appetite that
nearly rivals Maya's, and a particular penchant for beer, Saké, and basically anything that has alcohol in it. He’s also a self-
described Coffee addict. Affectionately known by Maya as Kôhei-kun, he has yet to settle on one really good nickname for her,
but until then, he has a virtual arsenal ready at all times.
In spite of his arrogant and seemingly belligerent nature, Kôhei does have a strong moral sense. He despises any manner of
mistreatment (especially towards women and children) and social injustice, and for an officer of the law can sometimes be
incredibly anti-establishment. He is not above under-the-table dealings and working around the system, although he does have
moral limitations. When dismayed, he is almost always ready with a quick reprimand for the other parties (or even the situation
itself), followed by preaching one his so-called “Rules of Kôhei”. Ironically, these rules often contradict one another, and rarely
are numbered anything other than “#1”. While he is inherently skeptical and sometimes critical of Maya’s “TV show logic”, he has
hinted that a past encounter with a still-unknown Rider made him more accepting of the unexplainable than most.
He has an African Grey parrot named Omelet, who he has trained to answer the phone, do long division, and quote from the Star
Wars films on command.
