Fan Art Contest '07
Well, that was hard.

When I first got the idea to do a fan art contest earlier in the spring, I hoped I would get a handful of nice entries, at the most
somewhere between 5 and 10, with a few clear-cut winners that would make deciding who would go home with the prizes easier.

Instead, I got nearly
two dozen entries, and all of them were very, very good. While a few did stick out upon first viewing, all of
them were still on a level far above what I was expecting, and ultimately, this made deciding the final five extremely difficult. In a
perfect world, I'd be able to send something to everyone who submitted an entry, because just taking the time and effort to
contribute to this funny little story of mine is commendable in itself. Alas, I'm not made of money (nor Rider toys), so for the
majority of contestants, I can only offer my thanks and congratulations, and display your work for all to see in the
Kamen Rider
Sigma Fan Art Gallery. I will say here to all who didn't make the top five, any amount of disappointment on your part is far
outmatched by my own at being unable to reward everyone for their hard work, but so it goes. The upside is, because of the
massive success of this contest, there will definitely be more in the future, and all who entered this time will be more than welcome
to give it another go then (and there may even be advantages for those who entered this time and didn't make the final cut!)

With that out of the way, it's time to get to the prize winners. Deciding on the top 5 was not easy, and required a great deal of
deliberation on my part, but I feel that the five that I picked are the ones which most captured what I wanted with a level of quality
that really surpassed all my expectations. So on to the winners! (Click the pics on the right for the full thing.)

"Untitled" by Jon

Jon's entry was one of the earliest that I received, and one
that stuck with me all the way to the end. There was
something unique about the simplicity and faithfulness of it;
it's just Sigma herself, but it's a really,
really good Sigma at
that. It perfectly captured exactly what I wanted most in
this contest: someone else drawing my characters in their
own style, and doing a fantastic job at that.
Congratulations, Jon!
"It's not Kamen Rider until a monster explodes" or
just "BAKUNETSU!"
by strangefour

In what could be a scene right out of
Kamen Rider Sigma
episode #2, Sigma and her three senior Riders pose
dramatically while something (probably a Kaijin) goes
boom in the background. The fluid, animated look of this
entry really wowed me, and I absolutely love the
background. A very strong contender in a contest full of
strong entries. Congratulations, strangefour!
"KamenSigma Rider"  by Sara

I was pleased that several people attempted to tackle
Maya, Sigma's alter-ego herself, as she is not an easy
character to draw (I keep debating on having her go get a
haircut.) Sara's entry made use of the classic "mask off"
look, complete with an interesting background and some of
her friends off to the sides. A fantastic piece of art that
impresses me every time I look at it. Congratulations, Sara!
"Ore Sanjou!"  by Will

Will sent in another entry before this one, but it was his
second try at a mid-Rider Kick Sigma that really raised my
eyebrows. The perspective, the coloring, the background...
it all just comes together really well, and I can almost
imagine her flying right off the screen to kick some evil butt.
I also liked Will's particular spin on the "hair" parts of the
helmet, with the black highlights. Not something that had
ever dawned on me, but it looks really cool, as does this
whole picture. Congratulations, Will!
"Untitled"  by DRa90NBoi

While the aesthetic changes DRa90NBoi made to Sigma
were within the limits of the rules (I mean, I can see that it
is Sigma, albeit with ZECT designing the costume), what
really won for this one were the other characters, including
the coolest-looking Sai-Jackhammer ever, and even
Kamen Rider Lilith! Not to mention the amazing quality of
the art itself. I mean look at it! It's very nearly like a real
comic book cover. Congratulations, DRa90NBoi!
So there we have it. Big congratulations to the winners, and congrats to all who entered period. As I said, my expectations were
totally blown away by the varied assortment of wonderful entries, and if I had the means, there'd definitely be 23 boxes going out
now (as Maya would say, "Yikes!")

But even if you didn't win this time, there will be a next time, possibly even as early as this fall. Expect more prizes, including a
Henshin Belt or two, and maybe even some
Kamen Rider THE NEXT goodies. But also be ready for some tougher rules,
because the subject of the next contest is very picky about how she looks (hint hint.) But hey, the greater the pain, the greater the
gain, right?

Thanks again to all who entered the
Kamen Rider Sigma Fan Art Contest 2007, and be sure to check out the Fan Art Gallery
to see all submissions, and (hopefully) some other fan art that nice people will send in between contest periods!
